Materials and Energy Corporation

The Radioactive Materials Handling License

The Radioactive Materials Handling License Application allows for receipt and waste processing for radioactive elements with atomic numbers 1 through 101. For atomic numbers 1 through 92, a total of 100 ci is allowed at any one time. For atomic numbers 93 through 101, a total of 1 ci is allowed at any one time, not to exceed 100 nCi/g of material. Special nuclear material is limited to less than 350 g on site at any one time.

The radiation material license must include the following:
  • Hydrogen-3, 10 ci total
  • For atomic numbers 3-83, 60 ci total
  • For atomic numbers 84-92, 29 ci total
Isotope Product Laboratories Am-241 Model EG-241-CH at 100 nCi and miscellaneous exempt sources.

RCRA Part B Permit

The RCRA Part B Permit will allow acceptance and treatment of most D, F, U, and P Code wastes. Waste treatment processes include the following:
  • Direct chemical oxidation for organic bearing wastes
  • Stabilization using mercury amalgamation, solidification, chemical stabilization and microencapulation
  • Debris using microencapsulation
  • Reactive waste by alkaline chlorination
  • Sludge dewatering and drying
  • Aqueous wastes by equalization, neutralization, precipitation, filtration, ion exchange, and activated carbon (as appropriate)

Waste Control Specialists

The Radioactive Materials Handling License

The Radioactive Materials Handling License Application allows for receipt and waste processing for any radioactive material up to and including Greater Than Class C material. There are limitations on sealed sources, and special nuclear material is limited to less than 350 g on site at any one time.

The RCRA Part B Treatment

The RCRA Part B Permit allows acceptance and treatment for all RCRA hazardous wastes.

Waste treatment processes include the following:
  • Thermal drying using an industrial vacuum rotary dryer
  • Thermal desorption with an off gas treatment system
  • Cement solidification using a batch system and advanced mixer design
  • Mercury amalgamation using zinc, sulfur powder and cement
  • Macroencapsulation of inorganic residues in concrete containers
  • Surface decontamination using recyclable pelletized blasting media or carbon dioxide
After determining if your waste can meet the WAC of the selected vendor, you can use the next page to develop an estimate of the price for transportation and treatment by that vendor.
