BECHTEL JACOBS COMPANY LLC
Safety Awareness

To All Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC and Subcontractor Employees:

In the past two weeks there have been some excellent examples of personnel on several projects recognizing a changed condition, stopping work, and contacting the right individuals to get help. Two of the specific examples include:
  • At the TRU trenches in Melton Valley, the work team recognized that the cask being removed weighed more than expected in the work package. They stopped work, got the project team together, analyzed the situation, and are developing a plan to address the condition.
  • At Building 1401 basement deactivation and clean out the work team discovered a small vial of unknown substance marked as Adenorvirus Type II. They immediately stopped work, backed out of the area, and contacted the right individuals. A team was formed to analyze the situation, come up with a new plan of action to safely remove the vial, and ship it to Oak Ridge National Laboratory for disposition.
There are other examples of project team members recognizing change and taking action every day on all of our projects at Oak Ridge, Paducah, and Portsmouth.

I want to thank all of the leaders who are recognizing change, taking action to stop, and contacting the right individuals for help. To my knowledge, we have never had an incident (accident or personal injury) as the result of stopping work. Thanks for the safety leadership. It is very much appreciated by all of us on this project!
