What is the TSCA Incinerator?
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is taking decisive steps to safely and cost-effectively treat and dispose of waste generated by past and current activities. The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Incinerator, located at East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP) in Oak Ridge, Tenn., plays a key role in treatment of radioactive polychlorinated biphenyl waste and hazardous waste ("mixed waste") from the Oak Ridge Reservation and other DOE facilities throughout the DOE complex. The TSCA Incinerator is permitted by the State of Tennessee to store and treat hazardous waste regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and operates under Environmental Protection Agency approval to treat PCBs regulated under TSCA. The incinerator is owned by DOE and operated by Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC, DOE's environmental management contractor for the Oak Ridge Reservation.
